Myth 1: All Physical Therapists are the Same

Physical therapists come from different backgrounds that all include training, years of education, and personal experiences. The education and career path each PT takes after their schooling add different and unique tools that will dictate what they use and when during therapy. We pride ourselves on the diversity of our therapists. Horizon’s programs are all unique with their own specialized PT that will work with you. Physical therapists have the same goal—getting you back to a pain-free lifestyle as soon as possible.

Myth 2: I need a referral to see a physical therapist

Based on research, the majority of average Americans think a referral or prescription is needed for evaluation by a physical therapist. However, a referral is not required in order to be evaluated by a physical therapist. Different states have different restrictions about the treatment a physical therapist can provide without a physician referral. In South Carolina specifically, anyone can be treated by a licensed Physical Therapist without a referral. Matt Clark explains mores in this video.

Myth 4: Physical therapy is only for injuries and accidents

Physical therapists do a lot more than just stretch or strengthen weak muscles after an injury or surgery. They are skilled at evaluating and diagnosing potential problems before they lead to more serious injuries or disabling conditions—from carpal tunnel syndrome and frozen shoulder, to chronic headaches and lower back pain, to name a few. We treat the whole person by utilizing a mind-and-body rehabilitation approach to complement, or replace conventional medicine.

Myth 5: Any health care professional can perform physical therapy.

You probably know that physical therapy can only be performed by a licensed physical therapist, but did you know that basic health care professionals can not also administer physical therapy. Many physical therapists pursue board certification in specific areas such as neurology, orthopedics, sports, or women’s health so you know you are being treated by a certified professional.
