October is National Physical Therapy Month

Raising Awareness of Physical Therapy

During National Physical Therapy Month in October, the American Physical Therapy Association encourages you to learn about the many benefits of physical activity. Physical therapists and physical therapist assistants play a critical role in helping Americans of all ages and abilities achieve their physical activity goals and improve their quality of life.

According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans, 2nd edition, more than 80% of adults and adolescents do not get enough physical activity. Horizon Rehabilitation & Sports Medicine is here to help.

Live a More Active and Fulfilling Life

The Physical Therapy Specialists at Horizon Rehabilitation are dedicated to helping the members of our Lowcountry community to live more active and fulfilling lives by maintaining and improving their overall health and fitness. Even if you do not need to rehabilitate a specific injury, or if you are not trying to avoid potential surgery for a problem, you need to incorporate a routine of physical activity to help lose and keep off excess weight and to maximize your longevity. Staying flexible is also key to movement as Matt Clark explains in this quick video tip of the day.

Top 10 Benefits of Physical Activity

Most Americans do not move enough. The good news is that regular physical activity is one of the easiest ways to reduce your risk for chronic disease and to improve your quality of life.

Make physical activity a priority to:

  1. Improve your memory and brain function (all age groups).

  2. Protect against many chronic diseases.

  3. Aid in weight management.

  4. Lower blood pressure and improve heart health.

  5. Improve your quality of sleep.

  6. Reduce feelings of anxiety and depression.

  7. Combat cancer-related fatigue.

  8. Improve joint pain and stiffness.

  9. Maintain muscle strength and balance.

  10. Increase life span.

Physical Therapy is the First Line of Defense

Physical Therapists are specialists in assessing your current fitness and activity level, as well as your particular abilities and limitations, and know how to handcraft a realistic strategy that personally fits you. Think of physical therapy as the first line of defense. It is also the safest avenue for pain management. Before jumping to opioids or just giving up, find a physical therapist, and book an appointment.

No referral is needed to initiate a personalized physical therapy evaluation. Horizon Rehabilitation offers a variety of specialized physical therapy and occupational services in the Lowcountry with help from our trusted and expert therapists. We have locations in Hilton Head, Bluffton, and Okatie.
