Telehealth Provides Relief for Physical Therapy
Introducing Telehealth
As the COVID-19 pandemic sweeps across the nation, the safety and well-being of our patients and team members is top priority. Luckily, Horizon now offers a new option for off-site patient care called Telehealth. This technology allows our therapists to deliver an in-person experience at a safe distance while treating orthopedic conditions, vestibular dysfunction, and pelvic floor dysfunction, to name a few.
The goals of your Telehealth physical therapy session are no different than those of any other outpatient physical therapy here at Horizon:
- Get you out of pain.
- Improve your strength, flexibility, and range of motion.
- Optimize your physical functioning.
From the Comfort of Your Own Home
Telehealth PT is not so different from your standard outpatient physical therapy visit except that you can enjoy the session from the comfort of your own home. Your physical therapist is an expert in movement and musculoskeletal dysfunction so they will guide you through stretching, exercises, and potentially modalities that can improve your overall physical well-being (according to your treatment plan).
A physical examination is obviously not going to be done in quite the same manner as an in-person evaluation. Manual muscle testing, for example, can’t be done by a physical therapist restricting your movement. Instead, vocal feedback about the movements that improve or worsen your pain or dysfunction will be necessary.
I’m not tech-savy, so what do I need for a Telehealth Session?
Not to worry as there is very little setup. For starters, you will need a good internet connection and a device (like a smartphone, tablet, or laptop) that has a functional webcam. Since your specific therapy may require movement, it is best to use a device which provides the optimal screen view.
We recommend a laptop, desktop, or tablet, be safely placed in a fixed position, in your at-home treatment area. Before you get started, your therapist can help you navigate any technical decisions needed to get the most out of your Telehealth physical therapy experience.
