That sneaky summer weather…
Are you getting regular headaches? One simple solution could be drinking more water. Dehydration can sneak up on you quickly. In fact, by the time you’re thirsty, you may already be dehydrated. Throughout the day, your body loses fluid due to regular physical activities, bodily functions, or the hot summer heat. If you do not replenish the fluid lost, your body will start to dehydrate, which can lead to a nasty, pounding headache!
Dehydration and Headaches
Dehydration is a common underlying cause of tension headaches, which is a headache that feels like a tightening or pressure sensation all over the head. A common symptom of dehydration headaches is an increase in pain when moving the head. It’s not entirely clear why dehydration causes a headache. It is believed that blood vessels in the head may narrow in an attempt to regulate body fluid levels making it harder for oxygen and blood to get to the brain – resulting in a headache.
Preventing Dehydration
The National Academy of Sciences recommends drinking around 11 cups of water per day for women and 16 cups a day for men. This number can vary based on lifestyle, body size, and other factors.
